Constructed in 1827, Gateway Playhouse is the oldest active theater on Long Island; during the summer it puts on a variety of productions, and in recent years it has been converted into a haunted house for the first half of autumn. Actors in costumes are not the only ghosts lurking about this old building, however. Patrons and employees have heard creepy, unexplainable sounds, seen ghostly figures and smoky forms, and witnessed objects seem to move of their own accord!

A murder took place at the Gateway century, and some say the moans are of the victim are still sometime audible. A man wearing a top hat has allegedly appeared in the sound booth and vanished just as quickly. Additionally, there have been reports of flickering lights, random tapping or knocking sounds, disembodied voices, and other paranormal phenomena.
