Posted 7/28/25Great place to relax to a sunset
I lived on the other side of this cemetery in the 70s. My best friend and I would walk over and hang at the cemetery watching the sunset..it was actually quite beautiful. I sat and wrote many a poem or short story there, leaving as dusk fell heavy. One day, goofing around my friend went into a mausoleum that was unnlocked. She went in and it shut right n locked. I didn't know what to do, and after about an hour I looked for groundskeeper. Nobody around and church was locked..finally, now dark, I found a groundskeeper and he had a hard time unlocking it as the lock was rusty and old. He said it hadn't locked in over 20 yrs.He then proceed to give us the riot act in how to stop coming over here and leave the dead in peace. I continued to go and write hanging from n the cemetery for a few yrs..still my peaceful place to watch the sunset. I never felt threatened or scared, but I did see shadows and things moving about. I never disrespected the dead or the cemetery and lov d writing there. I miss that peace and those days of being a young teen in Sayville, my home. I have been writing thrillers, mysteries and horror for a long time and this cemetery was my precursor to it all. I believe the spirits there knew I meant no harm or foul and they allowed me the peace there I needed so desperately at that turbulent time. Thank you, dear cemetery of my past. I'm praying that I will return to Sayville and my old home one day not too far away, and you will find me once again writing at the cemetery. We'll see!

A friend and I visited this cemetery last night. He saw dark shadowy figures and I saw a white male figure. While heading towards the back of the cemetery, right after I saw the figure, we both started hearing a bell ringing and immediately turned back. We also both saw a small orb of light. Went back this morning and we saw neither a bell or the light source.
