Found near Swan River near Grove Avenue in Patchogue, the Hanging Tree is said to have been the site of numerous deaths. In recent years two people are said to have been hanged there—one was a suicide and the other is less clear—but in colonial times it was the execution site for women accused of witchcraft.

A wide variety of paranormal activity has occurred near the Hanging Tree. Visitors have seen moving shadows and strange lights, and some say they feel hot/cold spots of a sense of uneasiness and dread. Electronic equipment has been knocked out of the hands of local investigators, and cameras have been known to malfunction. Some even report seeing a ghostly lady in white.

There have been no suicides at the "Hanging tree". I live across the street. There was a memorial to a young man who died that was posted there. The statement that the site was the site of Colonial era hangings is incredibly ignorant. The tree is a Red Oak that is perhaps 90-100 years old. There were no Salem-vintage executions in the entire Colony of New York-they all occurred in Massachusetts. Get your history right. There are paranormal events that we have not classified yet but this is not one of them. It really savages the credibility of what should be an important endeavor that follows a scientifically based methodology.
